Welcome to Food Bunka! Bunka means “Culture” in Japanese.
Here I share recipes, cooking and shopping tips. Most are Japanese-inspired. Occasionally, I review cookbooks. I also share photos from restaurants I have enjoyed.
For my entire life, I have enjoyed eating Japanese food.
My mother is from Tokyo, Japan where the food is an obsession.
When I was growing up, it was still a custom for the mothers to train up their daughters to keep the house and cook a great meal each night for their husbands (shocking, I know!).
I remember all the Japanese women in my family insisting that I would be “un-marryable” if I did not learn how to cook, sew and clean properly. I used to laugh and tell them it wasn’t like that in America. I was planning on going to college and hiring someone to do all that work for me. They were not amused; I had to take the matter seriously.
Many summers family would “test” me. Sometimes I repeated their recipes, and sometimes I would make some American dish like Vegetable Lasagne or California BLTs to my grandfather’s delight. He loved American food! I learned a lot from my family, and I am so grateful for their persistence in my education.
In my later life, back in America, I studied Japanese language, culture and history and received my Bachelor’s degree in East Asian Studies.
I have taught my self to cook using family recipes and experimenting with new ones. The Japanese culture, with food at the center, has continued to be an area of great interest to me.
I still visit Japan every few years, and it is always memorable. We all enjoy spending time roaming around the grocery stores and preparing food together, trying out the newest sushi restaurant or visiting our favorite Japanese and other Asian restaurants.
