Each January and July, many restaurants in Charlottesville participate in a charity event called “Restaurant Week”. For one week, the menu changes from the normal and is a special prix fixe selection (that’s a preset meal with a fixed price). I always take my husband out for one special date during Restaurant Week.
This Winter (Jan-2016), I chose Ten Sushi on the downtown mall. We have been here several times with family and friends, but never just the two of us. My husband is not a big sushi lover, but this time, I thought the Restaurant Week menu would appeal to him. The price was $36/person for a 3-course dinner…and this is a great price at Ten Sushi. Typically, our family can easily spend up to $200 depending on our sushi consumption.
Ten Sushi is a very posh place to eat. The decor is high style – minimalist and modern. It’s the only place in Charlottesville, Virginia, where I feel like I am in LA or Miami. In the sushi bar area, the area is bright white with low ceilings painted light tea green. The seats are white leather with chrome detail. In the main dining area and bar, the ceilings expand to warehouse height. The walls are painted dark grey and the lighting is dim and romantic.
My husband ordered the tempura shrimp appetizer, and I was shocked when it came out. I thought it would be traditional style tempura, but instead we received “Bang Bang Shrimp”. It was good, but not my favorite.
I ordered the tonkatsu appetizer was DYNAMITE – a clear winner for me. I wish I could have ordered two… The cutlet was perfectly deep-fried to a dark golden brown. The pork belly was salty, crispy and topped with the best-tasting Kimchi I have had in a long time. This should be transferred to their regular menu!
Finally, Sushi! My husband ordered the cooked sushi with Shrimp. He loves Shrimp. The Ebi Shrimp Roll is on their regular menu – you should try it! The sauce is delicious.
I ordered the spicy tuna roll, and it was not my favorite. I like mine with Japanese mayo, and theirs has jalapeños and other spices.
I know it would be weird to say “go to a sushi bar to get the best beef tenderloin”, but it’s true. Ten Sushi has the best beef tenderloin; it keeps my husband coming back since he is not a sushi convert. This beef melts in your mouth, and it is a regular feature on the menu. It is not special for Restaurant Week. This is a fantastic dish for anyone to try.
I ordered more pork, because I just love it. But, honestly, I was so stuffed from the first two courses, that I could not finish it. Do you know what I did with it? I actually removed it from the bone, chopped it up and put it on top of my homemade pizza the next afternoon. It was incredible!
I ordered my favorite sushi a la carte in lieu of dessert: Ikura (salmon roe) topped with Quail Egg. It was so delicious!
It was a perfect evening. You should take your sweetheart to Ten; you won’t regret it.
